Another day in May and another birthday...today it's Steve Kusnit's Birthday (aka Shifty K). The Caretaker can't tell you how old he is 'cause he can't count that high. Steve was instrumental during the event last year running the front door, queing up the groups and giving our clients insight to the creation of ZOMBIE MANOR.

Parasite Flies Turn Fire Ants Into ZOMBIES

It sounds like something out of science fiction: zombie fire ants. But it’s all too real.

Fire ants wander aimlessly away from the mound. Eventually their heads fall off, and they die. The strange part is that researchers at the University of Texas at Austin and Texas A&M’s AgriLife Extension Service say making "zombies" out of fire ants is a good thing.

"It’s a tool — they’re not going to completely wipe out the fire ant, but it’s a way to control their population," said Scott Ludwig, an integrated pest management specialist with the AgriLife Extension Service in Overton, in East Texas.

The tool is the tiny phorid fly, native to a region of South America where the fire ants in Texas originated. Researchers have learned that there are as many as 23 phorid species along with pathogens that attack fire ants to keep their population and movements under control.

So far, four phorid species have been introduced in Texas.

Cinco De Mayo isn't just the celebrated holiday commemorating the Mexican army's unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of Mexican General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín.[3][4] where the outnumbered Mexicans defeated a much better-equipped French army that had not been defeated in almost 50 years...it is also the birthday of Jack Mullins, one of our Zombie Wranglers at ZOMBIE MANOR.

The UNDEAD have their day at 2009 Texas Frightmare Weekend, The Southwest's premiere Horror Convention. This year's Zombie Walk was the 2nd annual co-sponsored by ZOMBIE MANOR and The Haunt House. With overcast skies and rain in the forecast over 100 of the faithful dead horde converged Saturday morning for their 1.0 mile stroll to the Sheraton Grand Hotel in Irving, Texas.
